Preventive Cardiology Q & A

What is Preventive cardiology?

Preventive cardiology focuses on the treatments, procedures and lifestyle changes that can be used to help patients maintain optimal cardiovascular health. Preventive care is appropriate for patients with existing heart disease or heart-related issues like a previous heart attack as well as for patients who have risk factors for heart disease and related conditions.

What does Preventive cardiology involve?

Preventive cardiology care begins with a physical exam and assessment of the heart's structure and activity. Lab work including blood tests for cholesterol and triglycerides may be performed, along with EKG testing, stress testing, and echocardiograms, depending on the patient's health, risk factors or symptoms. An in-depth personal and family medical history also play an essential role in identifying risk factors and determining the best course of action for preventing serious heart-related events. Once the initial evaluation is complete, care recommendations will be made to help maintain optimal cardiovascular health. Recommendations may include lifestyle changes like losing weight, quitting smoking, dietary changes or increasing physical activity. Medication may be administered to control blood pressure or cholesterol. Additional testing and evaluations may also be ordered, especially if an existing disease is suspected or has already been diagnosed.

How can I tell if Preventive care is right for me?

People with risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family or personal history of heart disease or related issues, those who are overweight or obese, smokers, and older men and women can all benefit from preventive care. preventive care can also be important for people who have heart arrhythmias or palpitations, fainting spells, shortness of breath, or certain diseases like diabetes or Marfan's syndrome. A primary care physician may recommend preventive care based on your medical history or other risk factors, but generally speaking, anyone with a personal or family history of heart disease or many other chronic illnesses can benefit from an evaluation, as can anyone over the age of 40 who has not had a cardiac evaluation.
